Fort Portal: Today makes a historical moment for the people of the Rwenzori region after Parliament officially granting Mountain of the Moon University (MMU) a public status.
The University shall become government-owned and led giving it the ability to access the consolidated fund for its growth.
”We have succeeded in getting one of the huge socio-economic transformation assets for our region,” said one of the concerned citizens from the Rwenzori region.
Hon.Tom Butime Ateenyi with Rwenzori MPs led the struggle to have MMU transformed into a public University.
The Mountain of the Moon University is a public university in Uganda. It is named after the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon.
After a long planning phase, the Mountains of the Moon University received the official license to become active as a University on March 29, 2005. The License was granted by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education.
The university is located approximately 1 kilometre (0.62 mi), northwest of the central business district of the town of Fort Portal, Kabarole District, in Western Uganda, approximately 320 kilometres (200 mi), by road, west of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city.
This location lies in the Kibundaire neighbourhood, to the north and west of the Fort Portal-Mubende Road, immediately after the bridge, as you leave Fort Portal.
A new campus is under construction at Lake Saaka, approximately 8 kilometres (5.0 mi), northwest of Fort Portal, along Saaka Road.Â
