MTN Uganda Apologises For Annoying Iteso

By Our Reporter
Telecom giants MTN Uganda have been compelled to apologise to Iteso people in Soroti for annoying them by misspelling some of the words in Ateso language.
Our Spies reveal that trouble for MTN started when they erected a billboard in Soroti town advertising some of their services, but on the said billboard they misspelt the word ‘Isirigin’ which means money as ‘Isiriginyi’. It said that whenever Iteso read the word ‘Isiriginyi’ they would laugh and ridicule the MTN billboard.

Some like James Peterson even took it a step further by ranting on social media, lambasting MTN for failing to hire someone proficient in Ateso to spell for them the words correctly. When matters worsened, MTN had no choice but to pull down the billboard and issue an apology. However, during the apology, MTN made another mistake by referring to Iteso people as the ‘Itesot community’ something that even attracted more lambasting from the Iteso.

Peterson took it upon himself to educate the MTN guys thus;
“So after my rant on social media regarding the MTN Billboard in Soroti that had a word saying “Isiriginyi” and not “Isirigin”, MTN brought down the billboard. I appreciate that. However, in their apology, they did it again. Dear MTN Uganda, we are “Iteso” not “Itesots”
The place is called “Teso”
The people are called “Iteso”
And the language is called “Ateso”
