Makerere University Council has instituted select committee to investigate Prof. Erias Hisali and Gordon Mulangira, the Personal Assistant of Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, over allegations of being behind the military and police’s brutality and raid of students; halls of residence.
While appearing before the Education Parliamentary Committee, the acting University Secretary Yusuf Kiranda said that the matter was forwarded to the University Council, which has since constituted a Select Committee to investigate the two officials.
The Vice Chancellor Makerere University Prof. Nawangwe however refuted reports that he has failed to engage the students in dialogue the University head, saying that he has on several occasions engaged the students through different platforms, including social media.
He also revealed that the reduction in the number of students admitted to Makerere University caused financial constraints which forced the University management to increase the tuition.
About the issue of State House scholarships, Nawangwe clarified that they receive Shs576M every year, and Shs1.2Bn is got from students sponsored on the Students Loan Scheme.
But Prof. Nawangwe shocked the legislators when he denied having knowledge of who deployed the army and police at the university.
However, several Members of Parliament on the select Committee raised various concerning the current unrest at Makerere University.
Emmanuel Ongiertho, the Jonam county legislator, called upon Prof. Nawangwe to resign, while Budiope West MP Robert Mutebi, urged the university management not to complicate issues but investigate all officials behind the violence and bring them to book expeditiously..
