KAMPALA, Uganda: what goes around, comes around, so goes the saying: This is the catch 22 situation that Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe is caught up in.
The ongoing strike at the university which that was organized by the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) seems to most likely attract in the students. The strike has since entered its second week. However, the students who are supposed to be in lecture rooms are stranded because there are no lecturers to teach them. As a result of this, a pressure group called the Concerned Students of Makerere University gave the VC and the University Council an ultimatum which has since passed. The students threatened to join the lecturers in the strike. However, Nawangwe Pleaded with Students to remain calm and desist from joining the strike.
He gave an example of students who are not attending lectures claiming there are no lecturers. The sit-down strike was declared after the suspension of Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi, the chairperson of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association MUASA, two weeks ago.
Dr. Kamunyu was suspended on January 17, for alleged indiscipline and inciting violence among Makerere University staff. He was also accused of intimidation of university officials, using abusive and or insulting language, insubordination and making false statements, among others. But staffs have since demanded his unconditional reinstatement citing that he was suspended illegally and irregularly.
