State House Entebbe: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has finally managed to convince his former minister Captain Francis Babu to pull out of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairman (Central) seat race in favour of incumbent historical and tycoon Al Hajji Moses Kigongo.
Babu has been crying foul and spitting venom after he was instructed by the NRM Secretariat and the Central Executive Committee (CEC) to stand down from the race, such that Kigongo, who has held the position for the past 30 years, can go through again unopposed ahead of the 2021 election. Babu had even vowed not to pull out of the race come rain or sun shine.
However, after meeting with President at State House on Saturday, Babu, together with his wife Margaret Zziwa Nantongo, has since accepted to pull out of the race.
Museveni confirmed Babu’s position by tweeting thus; “As we conclude the process, Captain Francis Babu, one of our own long-standing cadres and a worthy contender, having expressed interest in the position of 1st Vice Chairperson and being seconded by CEC, has pulled out of the race in good faith, for the benefit of the party.”
Museveni added that; “While I commend Capt Babu’s exhibition of comradeship and solidarity, I congratulate all the participants in ongoing party activities. It is my pleasure to witness the hive of activity and the number of people involved in building cohesion & continuity. Long Live the @NRM.”
