The Uganda Police have officially charged 40-year-old Jolin Kanoheri with the murder of her two-year-old son, Nganwa Rugari, in a deeply unsettling case that has captured national attention.
Kanoheri, a housewife and resident of Mutungo Zone 8 in Nakawa Division, stands accused of killing her son with malice aforethought between April 1 and 2, 2025. The alleged incident occurred at the family’s residence on Mutungo Hill, Kampala, according to a charge sheet filed by police.
She is being prosecuted under Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 128, which deal with murder committed with deliberate intent.
A second suspect, 24-year-old Robinah Nabbanja, who worked as a live-in maid at the Kanoheri residence, has also been charged. Authorities allege that Nabbanja acted as an accessory after the fact to murder under Section 189 of the Penal Code. She is accused of helping Kanoheri attempt to evade justice, fully aware that the child had been killed.
The chilling charge sheet states: “Between the 1st and 2nd day of April, the accused, with malice aforethought, unlawfully murdered Nganwa Rugari.”
Deputy Superintendent of Police Akongo Bibiana formally preferred the charges on April 10, with the case file stamped and acknowledged by the office of the Resident Chief State Attorney for Nakawa.
Kanoheri has been in detention at Jinja Road Police Station since April 4, after the child’s death was reported under suspicious circumstances. She maintains that her son died as a result of falling from a window in their home — insisting it was a tragic accident, not a crime.
However, skepticism surrounds her account. Her estranged husband, businessman Chris Rugari, has voiced his suspicions publicly, calling for a comprehensive investigation into his son’s death.
Kanoheri is expected to appear at Nakawa High Court this Friday afternoon for her first court hearing.
