No One Died Of Gunshots-Police Rubbish Claims Of Shooting To Death Bobi Wine’s 5 Supporters Yesterday

Kampala: Police yesterday revealed that they were investigating an accident that involved  supporters of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine that left them with severe injuries.

According to reports from the NUP camp, a police truck knocked down and killed five of their supporters, who were following presidential hopeful Kyagulanyi, as he campaigned in areas of Lugazi.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango has confirmed the incident, saying it happened at around 11:10 hours, but rubbished the claims that the five knocked died. He said only one has since died as opposed to five.

Onyango noted that the accident involved a police land cruiser and two motorcycles that were “riding carelessly” with registration number UDR 448C and another which was identified.

”The two motorcycle riders were riding carelessly and each was carrying two passengers. As the two riders were riding their motorcycles, one lost control of his motorcycle and knocked the other. The riders and passengers fell in the middle of the road and were knocked by a police car” Onyango said.

”One victim was rushed to Kawolo Hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, he has passed on. The deceased has been identified as Jonathan Ssempala, a 28-year-old”.

Onyango further stressed that in related developments, there are five people who sustained injuries when the vehicle they were in overturned.

Vincent Ssempijja, 18, is still admitted at Kawolo Hospital while the others have been referred to Mulago Referral Hospital.

They are Moses Ssentongo, 24, Steven Ssebuliba, 30, Robert Kigozi, 22, and Medi Ssebadeki. All are residents of Nakifuma, Mukono District.

However, NUP’S Secretary General Lewis  Rubungoya this morning couldn’t either confirm that the five people died yesterday as a result of gun shots or being knocked.

“We’re still compiling information about the victims, I can’t confirm now, but at least confirms that they knocked down one dead,” he said.
