Kampala – In a shocking development, Nyanzi Fred Ssentamu, the Head of Mobilization for the National Unity Platform (NUP), and the party’s deputy spokesperson, Waiswa Mufumbiro, were forcibly abducted on Monday evening by armed men at Kubbiri Roundabout, Kampala.
The abduction, which took place shortly after the duo had addressed a weekly press briefing at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, was confirmed by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu. According to Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, the two were violently taken at gunpoint and whisked away in a drone (a notorious type of van associated with enforced disappearances) to an unknown location.

“The regime has once again demonstrated its continued crackdown on voices of dissent. Our comrades Nyanzi Fred Ssentamu and Waiswa Mufumbiro have been abducted by armed men and taken to an unknown destination. We demand their immediate release,” Kyagulanyi stated.
Eyewitnesses at Kubbiri Roundabout reported a sudden commotion as a group of men, some in plain clothes and others in security uniforms, forcefully grabbed the two NUP officials before speeding off. Attempts to establish their whereabouts have so far been futile, as both their phones remain switched off.

This latest incident comes amid growing concerns over the increasing number of abductions targeting opposition leaders, activists, and supporters. Over the past months, NUP has repeatedly accused security agencies of orchestrating a systematic campaign of intimidation, arbitrary arrests, and enforced disappearances against its members.

Human rights organizations and civil society actors have also condemned these actions, calling upon the government to respect fundamental freedoms and ensure the safety of all citizens.

As pressure mounts, NUP and its supporters are demanding immediate accountability from the authorities regarding the whereabouts and safety of Nyanzi and Mufumbiro.
