In a collective effort to combat corruption, Uganda’s anti-corruption agencies, spearheaded by the Inspectorate of Government (IGG), Hon. Betty Kamya and the State House Anti Corruption Unit hosted a joint press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre to mark the International Anti-Corruption Day. Under the theme “Promoting Effective Youth Participation in the Fight Against Corruption,” the event highlighted the essential role of young people in addressing one of Uganda’s most persistent challenges.

With over 78% of Uganda’s population under the age of 30, the youth were recognized as a crucial demographic in the anti-corruption fight. Officials emphasized the need to provide platforms that amplify young voices, enabling them to take an active role in uncovering and resisting corrupt practices.

“Young people have the potential to be agents of change,” noted Hon. Kamya, reiterating the importance of educating and empowering this demographic to uphold transparency and integrity.

Brig. Gen. Henry Isoke, head of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU), reported notable advancements in public awareness and anti-corruption measures. While acknowledging the ongoing challenge corruption poses to Uganda’s development, he cited increasing citizen participation as a sign of progress.

“Awareness among Ugandans has significantly increased,” Brig. Gen. Isoke said. He called for sustained efforts to channel this awareness into concrete actions that deter and punish corrupt behavior.

This presser served as a rallying call for Ugandans, especially the youth, to take ownership of the fight against corruption. The emphasis on youth participation aligns with the broader goal of nurturing a corruption-free generation through education, advocacy, and civic engagement.

The International Anti-Corruption Day, observed annually on December 9, serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to uphold integrity and fight corruption at all levels of society. This year’s focus on youth aims to inspire a proactive stance in shaping a transparent future for Uganda.
