Kampala: One person was killed in a fire that destroyed more than 50 maize mills and 100 houses Friday on the outskirts of the capital, Kampala.

“Police are investigating a fire outbreak that took place today afternoon in Kisenyi. The police directorate of fire prevention and rescue services responded and managed to extinguish the fire,” police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said in a statement.

He said Godfrey Mukasa, 50, was found dead during a search of the area.

”It has been established that Mukasa was seated with his friends when the fire started but he was unable to flee because he had disabilities,” he added.

The fire took time for it to be contained because the area is in a congested slum and not easy to reach by firefighters.

More than 1,000 people have lost their livelihood because the area where the fire burned is where they were earning a living.

The police team also established that over 80 stores that deal in in grain, grinding machines, fridges were destroyed by the fire.

”The investigative teams have picked samples from the scene to establish the cause of the fire. The scene is being guarded by the police to prevent theft of property recovered from the structures that gutted fire,” said Luke.
