A powerful hailstorm has wreaked havoc at the Kalangala Police Station and barracks, resulting in significant destruction. Several uniports—temporary housing structures used by police officers—were completely destroyed, and reports suggest that one security officer lost his life.

According to the regional police spokesperson for Greater Masaka, Senior Police (SP) Twaha Kasirye, the storm caused extensive damage. SP Kasirye confirmed that a security officer died due to the heavy rains, but he refrained from disclosing further information regarding the identity of the deceased or the full extent of the damage.

“The rains were exceptionally heavy, and we believe a security officer may have perished in the storm,” said SP Kasirye. “Investigations are currently underway to assess the full situation and gather more details.”

The storm, which struck Kalangala with intense winds and torrential rains, is believed to have triggered the destruction. While the cause of the fire that consumed the uniports remains uncertain, authorities suspect that it could have been linked to electrical faults or other storm-related factors.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with both police officers and local residents attempting to extinguish the flames. Unfortunately, the strong winds and the highly flammable materials used in the construction of the uniports caused the fire to spread rapidly, hindering efforts to contain the destruction.

In the aftermath of the storm, authorities have launched a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the full impact of the disaster, including potential casualties and property damage. The Uganda Police Force is expected to issue a formal statement providing further details about the situation, including confirmation of any casualties and the extent of the loss.

Residents in the area have expressed concern over the tragic event, with many calling on the government to provide immediate support to the affected officers and their families. Some have also raised the issue of the vulnerability of uniports to such disasters, urging the government to improve housing conditions for police officers to ensure their safety and well-being.

“We are deeply saddened by the destruction, and we hope the government will take swift action to support the affected officers,” said one local resident.

As investigations continue, the police have assured the public that more information will be made available soon, providing clarity on the tragic incident and the steps being taken to address the aftermath.
