Over 100 Sucumb To Accidents In One Week-Police

According to Police, a total of 346 accidents occurred last week and out of these 64 accidents were fatal, 168 were serious and 114 were minor. 

Traffic Police spokesperson Faridah Nampiima says that there were 398 accident victims and out of these, 103 people died and 295 sustained injuries.

Of these road deaths, 28 people died on the same day of May 4th after a Link bus plunged into a tea garden in Fort portal on its way to Kampala and others died in a crash that involved three vehicles on Tirinyi road.

Now, Nampiima cautions Ugandans that as schools are expected to open today 9th May 2022 for term two. The season of school opening is usually characterised by the increased movement of persons and increased volume of traffic on roads.

”All road users should expect heavy traffic on the roads and are advised to plan their journeys early to avoid rushing and reckless driving since most of them will be moving almost at the same time,” says Nampiima adding, ”To avoid inconveniences all PSV drivers are reminded to respect road signage, to have discipline on the roads and avoid recklessness driving and all passengers are reminded to always wear their seat belts. The Traffic Police will be conducting spot checks on the same.”

She says that PSV operators should not load excess, and not rush students when offloading their luggage to avoid misplacements or losing them but also cautioned passengers that they should board from gazetted parks in order to ensure the safe travel.
