Police in Kampala together with sister Security agencies under the command of Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Commandant Dennis Namuwooza, raided several city plaza which include; Mutasa Kafero, Majestic Plaza, Cooper Complex, Kalungi Plaza and Kirumira Arcade in operation code-named ‘Tokola 3’, which was aimed at curbing phone and laptops theft in the city.
The operation targeted over 100 shops dealing in electronics like phones, laptops and over 100 suspects were arrested.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said that; “The operation comes as results of intelligence from crime intelligence reported during our briefing that most shops dealing in phones and laptops are selling stolen materials.”
The phones and laptops confiscated were registered and packed in sacks before being loaded onto police trucks and driven to Central Police Station, where the screening will take place.
Meanwhile, traders we talked to after the operation condemned security agencies for conducting such an operation without knowing the right person to arrest, but instead arresting every trader randomly.
Traders said that if such operations continue many youth dealing in used phones and laptops will remain jobless and might resort to getting involved in criminal activities.
