Kampala: Police in Kampala have Monday afternoon arrested city events promoters Abbey Musinguzi aka Abitex and Andrew …aka Banjo for allegedly inciting the masses.
The two were arrested from Kafumbe Mukasa Road in Owino market where they were distributing People Power T-shirts to traders and vendors.
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Oweyesigire said that “Promoters Bajjo and Abbitex were arrested for holding an unlawful assembly in Owino market, where they did not inform the police or market authorities.”
He added that “They are currently detained at Old Kampala Police Station as investigations go on.”
The two announced a campaign dubbed ‘bail me out’ which they claimed was aimed at collecting money to free prisoners who were arrested by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) law enforcement team.
Police also confiscated their materials including T-shirts, public address system and a vehicle.
They are now detained at old Kampala police station.
However, during the arrest police used boxers and bouncers from Kisenyi attack Banjo and Abbitex, before rounding them up.
Earlier in the day, the police in their weekly press conference had announced that they will not allow such unlawful assemblies to be held in the city because they disrupt operations of the business community.
