Police in Greater Bushenyi Sub-region on Wednesday morning blocked Forum for Demcoratic Change (FDC) president Engineer Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) and his team from visiting victims of the fuel tanker that exploded in Kyambura town, Rubirizi district, last week.
The FDC team that included Amuriat, Secretary for Mobilization Ingrid Turinawe and others were blocked at Katunguru by heavily armed police led by Fredrick Higwira, the Rubirizi District Police Commander.
They were travelling from Kasese heading to Kyambura but the police mounted a blockade in the middle of the road, which disrupted other road users.
Higirwa said that they were providing security to the leaders and also escorting them to the Rubirizi, something the FDC stalwarts rejected, prompting a standoff.
At least 23 people died when a fuel tank exploded in Kyambura last week, burning several people to ashes and destroying property worth millions of shillings.
The fuel truck reportedly overturned after failing to negotiate a corner at Kyambura Trading Centre in Kicwamba sub-county, Rubirizi district and burst in flames.
Last Sunday president Yoweri Museveni visited the area and told the locals that government would give condolence fees of Sh5M to the families of those who perished in the inferno and Shs1m to those who sustained injuries.
