Police in Gulu town are hunting for goons who burnt a truck belonging to Power supplier Umeme after the driver lost control and allegedly knocked Boda-boda riders at Layibi trading center in Layibi division along Gulu-Kampala highway on Sunday evening.
The angry mob burnt Isuzu UAN 656X after it allegedly knocked the riders of Bajaj motorcycles registration numbers UEN 625K and UDM 282T and injured them.
According to police, residents ganged up and torched the vehicle using grass and firewood. The driver of the truck and other occupants managed to flee to safety.
The Police Rescue and Fire team rushed to the scene but found the outer part of the truck burnt and towed the motorcycles and truck to Gulu Central Police Station, so as to conduct investigations.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River region police spokesperson said that “The injured motorcyclists were rushed to Gulu Main Hospital while the occupants of the truck were still at large.”
He added that “No arrests have been made in connection to the case of malicious damage being investigated at Gulu Central police station vide SD 27/03/11/2019. “
However, it should be noted that a few days back there was expression of public discontent among traders and residents in Gulu town over constant power outages.
Meanwhile, the Umeme office in Gulu town is yet to issue a statement about the saga and why the drivers were carrying an electric pole on a Sunday, yet the company’s offices are closed during weekends.
However, a source at Umeme informed us that the vehicle belonged to Modest Consult, one of our contractors.
