Kampala: The Police in Nansana, Wakiso district, have arrested a car hijacker who was operating with a gang of six armed robbers currently on the run.
The suspect was arrested after his gang stole a taxi on Wednesday night at gunpoint. Kampala Metropolitan police spokesman Patrick Onyango says that the taxi registration number UBE 082B was hijacked at gunpoint in Nansana Gganda, in Wakiso District.
Onyango said robbers persuaded the driver identified as God Kiyiga and the conductor Saddam Kisubi that they had people they wanted to transport to Bukalango Catholic prayer site, but ended up turning against them. “The robbers entered the taxi and informed Kiyaga and Kisubi that they had four passengers at the American Embassy. They picked them and drove to Nansana,” Onyango said.
Onyango added that “Shortly thereafter a Raum car started trailing the taxi up to Nansana Gganda. Later, the occupants of the Raum blocked the taxi and pulled out Kiyaga and Kisubi and dragged them into their car and sped off. Kiyaga and Kisubi made an alarm that forced the Raum driver to over-speed and in the process hit a tree.” One of the suspected thugs in a Raum was arrested after the police swiftly responded to alarms made by locals in the area. Police said other thugs that remained in the taxi disguising as passengers drove off to an unknown destination. A hunt for the stolen taxi and the thugs who were driving it have since been launched by the police. Meanwhile, the identity of the suspect in custody has been withheld by police so as not to jeopardize investigations.
