The Uganda Police have finally spoken out about one of their officers identified as David Openyi, who was investigating the theft of COVID-19 relief food from the Office of the Prime Minister, but died under unclear circumstances on Friday
Openyi, who was part of Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema’s State House Anti-corruption Unit, reportedly died at Nsambya Hospital, where he had been rushed shortly after complaining of mestyrious illness.
Shortly after his death, allegations started circulating that Openyi had been silenced, probably through poisoning by some Mafia groups, such that he could not compile the report about the findings his investigation had unearthed. Other speculations pointed at being a possible Codiv-19 victim.
However, following the widely spread speculations, the Uganda police have been prompted to come out and refute the rumours surrounding Openyi’s death, by asserting that he died of natural causes.
A statement about the matter issued by Charles Twiine Mansio, the Spokesperson for the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), reads in part thus;
“Our attention has been pulled to a misleading media posting distorting facts about the cause of death of our police officer, Inspector of Police Openyi David who passed on 4th June 2020, at St Francis Nsambya Hospital.
We wish to inform the general public that the officer died of natural illness and the exact cause of death was clearly indicated on the death certificate that was given and explained to the immediate family members.
The police condemns the misleading post that is trending on social media and further warn that such posts are not only immoral but also criminal.
We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family of comrade David Openyi and pray that his soul rests in eternal peace. Rest in peace comrade David Openyi.”
Lt. Col. Nakalema had earlier on tweeted about Openyi’s death by writing thus; “My team and I are mourning one of our most dedicated and trustworthy colleagues D/AIP David Openy. His death has shocked us. We pray for his family as we seek for answers.
May His Soul Rest In Peace.”
