The police have warned that there is a group of people in Kampala mobilizing hooligans purporting to be boda-boda riders to stage riots in several parts of the city on Monday, to protest against President Yoweri Museveni’s directives banning all boda-boda riders from carrying passengers.

During his 15th National Address on Coronavirus on Monday, President Museveni announced that due to the high health risk they pose, boda-bodas will not be allowed to carry passengers so as to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

However, the directive sparked off mixed feelings and stiff resistance from boda-boda operators, who have since resolved to a stage massive protests in Kampala on Monday June 8th, 2020, as a way of forcing President Museveni to lift the ban.

However, after receiving intelligence about the impending protests, the police have warned all people who intend to participate in the protests to desist from doing so, because force will be applied in dispersing them.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango issued the warning in a statement he posted all social media, which reads thus;

Patrick Onyango’s warning to all boda-bodas who intend to participate in the protests

 “Kampala Metropolitan Police have received credible information that opportunistic people are mobilising hooligans and disguise them as motorcycle (boda boda) operators to carry out demonstrations next week to disrupt government systems to ease the lock down after successful containment of the spread of Coronavirus in the community.

According to intelligence information, these demonstrations are being planned, mobilised and sponsored by opportunistic people within Kampala Metropolitan Policing area.

They are also mobilising boda boda operators to disrupt the government efforts in Coronavirus containment at the time when there are systematic processes to ease the lock down.

We want to appeal to the public, especially boda boda operators, not to be lured into illegal activities by opportunistic people, who are working for their own benefits.

We caution anyone who intends to engage in criminal activities that the long arm of the law will catch up with them.”
