Kanungu, Uganda: A trigger-happy policeman has been arrested by the police in Kisoro district for allegedly shooting a civilian dead.
Constable Anacyed Byaruhanga, a Counter Terrorism Officer attached to Buhoma Police post in Kanungu district, is alleged to have shot Abdul Hakim Tukamushaba, who died on pot.The Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate said that “Tukamushaba, who was armed with a panga, was shot as he attempted to access Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge in Rubuguri town council where Byaruhanga had been deployed to guard.” He added that on searching the body, Tukamushaba was found with several rolls of Marijuana in his pockets. The police later transferred the body to Kisoro hospital for postmortem a investigations continue. Meanwhile, Byaruhanga is detained at Kisoro police station for interrogations and to help with investigations. However, Tukamushaba’s father Robert Kyomukama dismissed the police version of events. Kyomukama claims that his son was walking to Rubuguri trading Centre when he was intercepted by Byaruhanga. According to Kyomukama, the officer shot his son while as he tried to flee so as to save his life.
However, Tukamushaba is not the first civilian to be shot dead in the area. In July 2018, Police Constable Paul Mwanga, an officer attached to the Field Force Unit at Kisoro Police Station, shot dead Stephen Ntagahorero and injured Desiderio Munyaneza and Posiano Maniragaba, all residents of Gikoro village in Nyakabande Sub County. The shooting occurred in Gikoro village in Rwingwe parish in Nyakabande Sub County. The officer opened fire when residents charged at police officers who had gone to the area with a sniffer dog to arrest suspected thieves.
