President Museveni Confirms Next Speaker Of Parliament Will Be Elected On May 24

Kampala: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has confirmed through a letter to Speaker of Parliament Rt.Hon.Rebecca Kadaga, that the proclamation for the First Sitting of the Eleventh (11th) Parliament in which the speaker and deputy speaker will be elected is scheduled for 24, May 2021 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

Writing through his principal private secretary Dr. Kenneth Omona on May 10, Museveni says;

“This is to inform you that His Excellency the President has signed the proclamation for the First Sitting of the Eleventh Parliament to be held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on the 24th day of May 2021 at 10:00am.”

The letter came hours after Kadaga responded to Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda’s request for postponement of the election to allow political parties caucus and agree on which candidate to back for the two slots.

The Speakership race has so far attracted interest from five candidates including incumbent Rebecca Kadaga (NRM) and her deputy Jacob Oulanyah (NRM), Rakai Woman MP Juliet Kinyamatama (NRM), Ssemujju Nganda (FDC) and Richard Sebamala (DP).

The race for deputy speaker has also attracted a number of candidates including Bukedea Woman MP Annet Anita Among, State Minister for Finance, David Bahati and Robinah Rwakoojo, the Gomba West MP not forgetting Thomas Tayebwa, Muhammad Nsereko and Jacob Oboth-Oboth.

FDC remains the only political party so far to endorse a candidate for both the Speakership and Deputy speaker race as the rest are yet to make any official announcements.
