His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has sent a warm message to his counterpart Everiste Ndayishimiye, the newly elected Burundian who was sworn in today, Thursday June 18th, 2020.
President Museveni congratulated President Ndayishimiye in a message he posted on his Social Media platforms, which reads thus;
“Congratulations to His Excellency Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Evariste Ndayishimiye, who was sworn-in today as President of Burundi, following the massive victory of the CNDD-FDD party in elections held on May 20th, 2020.
The resounding victory was a clear manifestation of the level of trust and confidence the people of Burundi have in the new President and his party. I also thank the people of Burundi for being peaceful during and after the election.
On my own behalf and that of Ugandans, I wish you a successful tenure in office as well as the continued peace, progress and prosperity of Burundi. We also look to working closely with you to strengthen bilateral ties of our two countries.”
Ndayishimiye was due to replace fallen Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza, who passed away early this month due to cardiac arrest, although other sources claimed he had been a victim of COVID-19.
General Évariste Ndayishimiye, born 1968, is a Burundian politician, who serves as President of Burundi since 2020. He became involved in the rebel National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy (Conseil National Pour la Défense de la Démocratie – Forces pour la Défense de la Démocratie, CNDD–FDD) during the Burundian Civil War and rose up the ranks of its militia.
At the end of the conflict, he entered the Burundian Army and held a number of political offices under the auspices of President Pierre Nkurunziza. Nkurunziza endorsed Ndayishimiye as his successor ahead of the 2020 elections which he won with a large majority and was due to be sworn in this August.
However, Nkuzunziza’s abrupt death necessitated the quick swearing in of Ndayishimiye such that he could take over the mantle of power from his fallen predecessor.
