President Museveni Re-appoints Dr Chris Mukiza As UBOS Executive Director

Kampala: President Yoweri Museveni has extended Dr. Chris Mukiza’s tenure as Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) for another five years as Uganda prepares for National Housing and Population Census 2024.

Dr. Mukiza, who assumed the role of Executive Director on March 30, 2019, saw his initial five-year term conclude this month, on March 31, 2024. However, President Museveni has shown confidence in his leadership by granting him another term to steer the country’s statistical endeavors.

Recently, UBOS confirmed Dr. Mukiza’s reappointment, highlighting the government’s trust in his abilities to guide the bureau for another five-year term.

“The Board, Management and Staff of Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) congratulate the Executive Director Chris Ndatira Mukiza (PhD) on his well-deserved reappointment for another 5 years as the Executive Director of Uganda Bureau of Statistics which appointment keeps him as the Chief Statistician of the Country,” UBOS said in a statement

“This reappointment is a testament of faith, confidence, and support that Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, Hon. Matia Kasaija, the Minister of Finance Planning and Economic Development and the Board of Uganda Bureau of Statistics have bestowed upon you,” UBOS added. (https://irusa.org/)

“This further showcases your exemplary, visionary, and transformational leadership that has produced remarkable accomplishments for the Bureau during the past 5-year term. We are confident that the next 5 years of your leadership will place the Bureau to the standard of a World Class National Statistics Office.”

President Museveni officially renewed Dr. Mukiza’s contract on January 18, 2024, ensuring his continued stewardship of UBOS until January 18, 2029.

Dr. Mukiza, the third Executive Director of UBOS, succeeded Ben Paul Mungyereza in this role.

Prior to his appointment as Executive Director, Dr. Mukiza held various positions within UBOS, including Director of macroeconomic statistics and roles within the Executive Director’s Office between 2000 and 2009.

With Dr. Mukiza’s reappointment coinciding with preparations for the National Population and Housing Census 2024, UBOS is gearing up for the implementation of this significant enumeration exercise, set to utilize digital technology for data collection and processing a first for Uganda since the last census conducted in 2014.

Dr Mukiza holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton, a Master’s degree in Economics from Makerere University and a Bachelor of Statistics degree from Makerere University.

The National Population and Housing Census (NPHC) is scheduled to take place from 2024 from May 10 to May 19 with May 9 as census night.
