Hon.Muhammad Ssegirinya, born on February 22, 1988, in Butale, Kadugala, Masaka District, Uganda, was a prominent Ugandan politician and activist, widely known as “Mr. Update” for his dynamic social media presence. He passed away on January 9, 2025, at the age of 36.

Early Life and Education

Ssegirinya’s early life was marked by economic hardship. He began his education at Kadugala Primary School, achieving 13 aggregates in his Primary Leaving Examinations. He continued his studies at Kaddugala Secondary School and later at Pimba Secondary School in Kyebando. Originally named Richard Ssegirinya, he converted from Roman Catholicism to Islam, adopting the name Muhammad.

Political Career

Ssegirinya’s political journey began as an active caller on Kampala-based radio talk shows, where he referred to himself as “Ssegirinya eddoboozi lye Kyebando” (the voice of Kyebando). His grassroots activism and engagement with the community earned him significant recognition.

In 2016, he was elected as the Lord Councillor for Kampala Capital City Authority, representing Kawempe North. Building on his popularity and commitment to his constituents, he contested the Kawempe North parliamentary seat in 2021 under the National Unity Platform (NUP) and won, defeating nine other candidates, including the incumbent Abdulatif Ssebagala Ssengendo and former Deputy Lord Mayor Sulaiman Kidandala.

Arrest and Health Challenges

In September 2021, Ssegirinya was arrested alongside fellow MP Allan Ssewanyana on charges including murder and terrorism, allegations widely believed to be politically motivated due to their opposition to the ruling party. During his detention, reports emerged of severe torture, leading to significant health complications. After spending approximately one and a half years on remand, he was released on bail in February 2023. Following his release, Ssegirinya sought medical treatment in Nairobi and later in Amsterdam to address the injuries sustained during his incarceration.

Death and Allegations of Poisoning

On Thursday, January 9, 2025, Ssegirinya passed away at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala. His death has been surrounded by allegations of poisoning during his detention, with supporters and some medical reports suggesting foul play. These claims have intensified calls for an independent investigation into the treatment of political detainees in Uganda.
