Uganda police was heavily deployed on Thursday to strengthen security both at Makerere University main gate where the matching started and Kololo airstrip as Israelis were celebrating their 70th anniversary of the re-birth since 1948.
The Uganda Police band led the congregation up to Kololo where people were checked with the help of the UPDF to access the airstrip. Thousands of Ugandans joined the trek chanting ‘’Israel the land of salvation’’.
James Ssemuddu, one of the trekkers said the youth joined the celebrations because Israel has a good relationship with Uganda. He said Israel have given many Ugandan youth internship opportunities since 2013. ‘’That gives a reason to appreciate them and join them on this great day’’. Ssemuddu said.
The day is celebrated to remember the Jews’ return from exile in 1948 to re-claim their biblical homeland after they had been taken into Babylonian captivity. Israel was officially declared and globally recognized as a Nation again for the first time in over 2500years.
The rebirth of Israel also means their independence in 1948. The entire race of Jews had been without a homeland for soo long without assimilating into surrounding population which makes the day significant in the world history.
