Police in Bugiri town, eastern Uganda, are investigating circumstances under which a truck driver lost control and rammed into a building housing Centenary Bank on Monday morning.
Eyewitnesses reveal that the truck number UBD 669H t which was heading to Kampala from Tororo direction failed to brake while trying to negotiate a corner and the driver ended up entering with into the bank building.
It is not yet clear whether there were any casualties but the fortunate thing is that the bankers had not yet entered the building at the time of the accident.
However, a source at the bank reveals that property worth millions of shillings has been destroyed as a a result of the accident.
But is also said that the driver and the turn-boy fled the scene shortly after the accident currently the police are hunting for them, as they conduct investigations intot the matter to establish the cause of accident.
Traffic police in Bugiri town however blamed the accident on reckless driving by the truck driver, who is suspected to have either dozed off off been driving under the influence of alcohol.
Centinary Bank Issues statement
As a result of the incident, Centenary bank has issued the following statement;
STATEMENT ON TEMPORARY DISRUPTION OF SERVICE AT BUGIRI BRANCH
Centenary Bank would like to inform the general public of the temporary disruption of service at our Bugiri Branch effective today. This follows an accident involving a truck, registration number UBD 669H that rammed into the branch around 4am on Monday 16th September, 2019.
The incident did not cause harm to any of our customers, or staff as the bank was closed. All our personnel are safe and accounted for including the security team on duty at the branch at the time.
Police is investigating the circumstances under which the accident occurred. Our Bank is taking all the necessary steps within the constraints of time and safety to ensure Bugiri branch resumes as soon as possible.
So far, some of the CenteAgents are already stationed at the branch to offer service. The ATM is also fully functional. We encourage our customers in Bugiri to access service through our alternative channels including CenteMobile, AgentBanking.
