Merciful Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Anita Among has today rescued eleven opposition woman MPs arrested in the middle of Parliamentary Avenue while marching to petition Internal Affairs Ministry over continuous torture and brutality by security operatives.
Clad in a maroon velvet suit the Speaker walked into CPS escorted by Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa and after some few minutes she was seen coming out with the jailed MPs.
The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire earlier said that the MPs face charges of obstructing oncoming traffic at the entrance of parliament and holding an unlawful assembly.
Owoyesigyire says during the scuffle, one of their officers was badly injured and has been admitted to hospital.
The house which was chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon .Thomas Tayebwa expressed disappointment in the manner in which security personnel handled the female opposition MPs.
“My question is who are these people working for? Because government needs to reflect and find out who is behind them. I don’t think these are people who are working to protect government or its image, they must be working for an invisible hand that aims to bring down the government because I don’t see any single justification for these actions,” Tayebwa said.
The Minister of State for Internal Affairs, Hon. Gen. David Muhoozi said the brutal treatment of the female MPs was unwarranted and has told Parliament that the Ministry passed the instruction to have the 11 MPs released unconditionally.
However, the Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga was not satisfied with the response saying such ‘nonsense’ behavior cannot be tolerated.
The house got into a mess as Peter Ogwang State Minister for sports raised objection to the language used by the LOP in parliament. The Deputy Speaker was compelled to adjourn the house for 10 minutes.
Later, Tayebwa returned and appreciated the Speaker for ensuring the rescue to the MPs. He also proposed that their demands to hold belated day celebrations are upheld as others have done.
Earlier, the National Unity Platform President Robert Kyagulanyi opposed the actions of police.
“We strongly condemn the unjustified violence and indignity that Uganda’s security agencies have meted out on Women Members of Parliament today morning as they peacefully protested against being harassed by police and the military when doing their work.” he said.
