Kampala: With one year of construction, Speke Resort Convention Centre at Munyonyo is now 100% complete, marking a significant milestone as the first of its kind in Uganda and East Africa.

This accomplishment precedes the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 (G77) summits scheduled to commence on January 15, 2024 with over 5,000 delegates and 70 heads of state from 120 countries.

The two diplomatic summits will take place at the contemporary Convention Centre within the Commonwealth Speke Resort Munyonyo, a collaborative effort between the government and renowned city tycoon Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia.

Beyond serving as the venue for the NAM Summit and the G77 China, the state-of-the-art convention Centre also aims to elevate Uganda’s Meetings, Incentives, and Conferences & Exhibitions (MICE) potential and competitiveness.

With a track record of success in the real estate and hospitality industry, Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, Chairman of the Ruparelia Group assured Ugandans during a facility tour that all aspects of the project would be completed on schedule and indeed, he has not disappointed.

Situated within a 105-acre luxury resort complex, the convention center boasts a 4400-seater auditorium, a versatile multipurpose hall, 12 upscale conference/breakaway meeting rooms, and a floating restaurant with a capacity exceeding 900 guests. This restaurant offers a captivating view of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest freshwater lake.

President Museveni, too earlier inspected and assessed the readiness of various infrastructure projects ahead of the two summits from 15th-23rd January 2024.

NAM will run under the theme: “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence” whereas the Third South summit will focus on “Leaving No One Behind.”

Uganda is set to chair the NAM Summit from January 2024 to 2026, with President Museveni succeeding Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev to lead the second-largest group of countries globally, following the United Nations.

Founded in 1961 during the Cold War, the Non-Aligned Movement comprises 120 member countries, with representation from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
