Suspected Grenade Explodes,Kills One In Rukungiri

Uganda Police is investigating circumstances under which one person lost his life after a suspected grenade blasted.

Julius Ahereza 18 years, a domestic worker of Gershom Behayo on Thursday, August 29, around 2:15pm lost his life at Kinyamahwa cell Kahoko parish Nyakagyeme s/c Rukungiri district.

Mr. Ahereza was at home collecting rubbish at a mango tree to the rubbish pit to burn it when a big blast (most likely of a rusty grenade) was heard which killed him instantly.

One of the eye witnesses, Medius Behayo said, Ahereza had finished collecting garbage and was taking it for burning when she had a blast.
“He had finished collecting garbage, as he ascended to the collection pit to burn it, I heard a blast and on getting closer to him I found his intestines out” Behayo narrates what transpired.

He told me that he was dying, that was his last word “Behayo added”.

Police was notified, visited the scene and cordoned it as police bomb squad is expected to investigate and establish which type of device it is.

Ahereza’s body was taken to Rwakabengo health centre for postmortem and inquiries underway and case registered at Rukungiri police station on file number CRB 1054/2019.

Elly Maate the Kigezi region police mouthpiece called on the area residents to remain calm as the police bomb squad carries out investigation to establish the real type of the explosive.

“We have already notified our police bomb squad to visit the crime scene and initiate the kind of an explosive that caused the death” Maate said.

Ahereza was a resident of Rwamunyinya cell, Masya parish Nyakagyeme sub-county Rukungiri district.
