Kampala: The Kampala Metropolitan Police has dismissed allegations of torture involving one of its officers, following widespread concerns raised on social media
The allegations centre around Superintendent of Police (SP) Ntabu Joel, who oversees investigations at the Central Police Station (CPS).
In a press statement released by Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the force acknowledged the public’s concerns but emphasized the need for formal reporting channels to initiate a comprehensive investigation other than meagre allegations on social media without any proof.
“We assure the public that their concerns have been acknowledged. The Police are committed to investigating these allegations thoroughly. However, it is important to clarify that investigations will not be conducted based on social media posts.” Owoyesigyire said.
Police further urged any aggrieved individuals to formally report their grievances to the Professional Standards Unit and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) at Kibuli and follow proper procedures to ensure that investigations are conducted fairly and effectively.
SP Ntabu Joel’s role at the Central Police Station includes the assignment and supervision of case files until they are submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
According to Police, the suspects in question, who were arrested on July 23, 2024, were brought before the court that same evening and one suspect remained in custody.
Police further revealed that the presence of CCTV cameras in the Police lobby where the suspects were processed noting that any incidents of misconduct would be reviewed through recorded footage.
”The Police lobby, where the suspects were ushered, is equipped with CCTV cameras. Unless formal complaints are made, any allegations on social media will be considered an attempt to malign the officer’s reputation, who was lawfully executing his mandate” Oweyesigyire assured.
Police’s response comes at a time of growing public scrutiny over the conduct of law enforcement officers, with the force facing increasing pressure to ensure accountability and transparency in its operations.
