A passenger boat has capsized on Lake Victoria in the Kalangala Islands with an unknown number of travelers, TheSpy Uganda has learnt.
According to reports, the boat capsized last night while ferrying passengers from the Kasenyi landing site in Katabi Town Council, Wakiso district to Kisaba island in Kalangala district.
Fishermen who talked to this site revealed that the accident happened after fishing nets got stuck in the speedy boat’s engine.
Moses Musiitwa, a fisherman at Kasenyi landing site, says that the boat capsized between Lukuba and Misenyi island after being hit by strong winds on the lake.
Contrary to the above, local leaders say the boat was overloaded with many passengers and other luggage like timber, bags of cement, fish, foodstuffs, and pieces of iron sheets beyond its recommended capacity, which might have caused the accident.
A joint search by marine police, UPDF, and local fishermen is underway and by press time, at least 6 bodies had been retrieved from the water.
These come few days after another accident on Lake Victoria in Buvuma and Kiyindi landing site in Buikwe District that claimed six people.
