Two Arrested By State House Anti Corruption Unit, Remanded To Prison Over Mismanagement Of PDM Funds

Kampala: The State House Anti-Corruption Unit in conjunction with Uganda police have arraigned Busita Sub-County LC3 Chairperson Mukota Patrick Benerd and a one Nambozo Hellen before Sironko Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly mismanagement of PDM funds.

The Anti-Corruption Unit revealed that this was done after through investigations which established that the two people mismanaged PDM funds meant for beneficiaries in Sironko district and they have been remanded until next month.

”The duo were charged with unauthorized use or interception of computer services and theft. They have been remanded until 21/03/2024 and join Magomu Eddy, who had been previously apprehended” the Unit said in a statement.

According to State House Anti Corruption Unit, the accused and their accomplices, who are still at large, utilized a SIM card registered under Magomu Eddy’s name to fraudulently obtain UGX5M from the PDM Wendi App accounts of five victims compelling the victims reported this matter to the RDC Sironko, who forwarded it to the PDM Secretariat who requested the Unit to investigate the matter.

The accused illegally obtained the PINs of the victims without their knowledge and changed them after which they hacked their Wendi mobile accounts, only for them to see notifications on their phones showing that their PINs had changed and money had been transferred to a number registered in the names of Magomu Eddy.

Wendi is a mobile application used to transfer the PDM funds to beneficiaries.

The State House Anti Corruption Unit (SH-ACU) in one year, 2022, managed to recover Ugx35.484bn from corruption masters of this country, the annual report revealed.

The Unit also managed to arrest and arraign in court over 448 suspects. Among these, courts convicted 70 culprits including government accounting Officers, Executive Officers, managing directors, Secretaries of Commission, CAOs, and Town Clerks.

SH-ACU was established under Article 99(4) of the constitution of Uganda, which gives the President executive powers to either directly or indirectly perform his duties or through officers subordinate to him.

Launched on 10th December 2018, SH-ACU coordinates with all constitutionally mandated agencies to ensure a corruption-free country.

The Unit also acts as a link between H.E. the President, citizens, and Anti- Corruption agencies in relation to Anti-Corruption issues.
