Shocked gripped residents and traders in Kampala on Tuesday afternoon after a bar collapsed, killing two people on spot.
Kaije Coffee bar and guesthouse, located in Namirembe, collapsed into a heap on the ground during the heavy downpour that ravaged several parts of Uganda on Tuesday afternoon.Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango said that “The two victims were taking coffee when the structure collapsed, killing the two on spot.” He however added that their identities are yet to be established. He said that it was too early to tell how many other people could have died or sustained injuries since a number of them were still trapped in the debris.
Police’s fire and emergency rescue teams have already arrived at the scene to retrieve the bodies and rescue those that are trapped under the debris. The police have however not yet established what could have caused the tragedy, although it is suspected that the structure was worn out and needed refurbishing. However, they are still conducting investigations into the matter. By press time, no employee, manager or proprietor of the facility could be got for a comment about the incident.
