Two Indian Nationals; Patel Kunal Jagdishchandra and Patel Mayur have been handed a fine of UGX 40 million each or to serve 8 years in jail for unlawful possession of wildlife protected specimen and attempted export of ivory without a permit.

The two were convicted by the Entebbe Chief Magistrate Her Worship Stella Maris Amabilis on their own plea of guilty to the two counts of unlawful possession of wildlife protected specimen and attempted export of ivory without a permit.

Court further ordered deportation of Patel Kunal after serving his sentence.

According to Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Patel Kunal was arrested on September 9, 2022, at Entebbe International Airport by aviation security at the screening machine after being found in possession of worked ivory that had been concealed in his jeans trousers by way of sewing some in the pockets. The ivory weighed 1.1kilograms.

”Security was informed that Patel Kunal was given the items by one Mayur Patel a resident of Tororo. A joint team of Uganda Wild Life Authority (UWA) and Aviation Police headed for Tororo and arrested Mayur on September 11, 2022,” says UWA.
