Kampala: The Uganda Red Cross Society has unveiled a Shs1.6Bn disaster management action plan for responding to disaster associated with September to December rainfall season.

The society say they have been informed by the weather forecast released by Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNIMA) indicating that there will be heavy rains associated with thunderstorm, landslides, lightning among others in various parts of the country throughout the last quarter of 2019.

The secretary-general of Uganda Red Cross Society Robert Okwesiga said “We are preparing to respond to and mitigate the effects some of the predicted disasters because some disasters have already happened in several parts around the country. So far 15 districts have registered cholera outbreaks and it has killed two people, plus affecting 229 households in Busia, Bududa, Isingiro and Kyegegwa.”

Kwesiga added that “Heavy floods and landslides have occurred in districts like Butalejja, Otuke, Manafa, Bundibugyo, Gulu, Kasese, Bulambuli, Mbale and Nakapilipit.”

The society projects that the seasonal disasters will affect at least 5000 households calling upon the general public to generously support them in all ways they can as they encounter this challenge.

Meanwhile, the Director Health and Social Services Dr Josephine Okwera appealed to the general public for mult-sectoral support to anticipated disasters so as to minimize impacts in livelihoods.
