The Uganda Police Force (UPF) have issued a statement about the two Umeme staff who were electrocuted to death as they worked on powerlines in Wantoni, Mukono District, which seems to be contradicted by another statement issued by Umeme about the same incident.
The statement, in which the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango identified the deceased as employees of Umeme, reads in part thus;
“Two people were electrocuted to death while repairing UMEME line at WANTONI, Mukono District, today (Friday August 7, 2020).
The deceased are Moses Kasita, a stores assistant at UMEME Uganda, and Jacob Mutalaga, 28, also a UMEME official.
The incident happened at around 11:45am.
A team of detectives have visited the scene and started the investigations.
The body of Kasita Moses was found at the scene in a UMEME van registration number UAZ 704Q and while that of Mutalaga Jacob was at Mukono International Hospital.
Police preliminary findings indicate that the deceased were putting on UMEME attires before the incident but were undressed immediately after the electrocution.
Uniforms for the deceased persons recovered from the UMEME truck number UAA 286E. One of uniform had the name KASITA MOSES.
There was no physical injuries observed on the bodies. They were taken to Mulago City mortuary for postmortem as investigation continues.”
Meanwhile, Umeme, through their publicist Peter Kaujju, has since also issued a statement about the unfortunate incident, stating thus;
“Fatal incident – Mukono
Today August 7, 2020 at about Il:00Am, two individuals were electrocuted while executing works on a distribution transformer in Mukono
The deceased have been identified as Moses Kasiita (non-staff) and Jacob Mutalaga (Mutico contractor). Investigations into the matter by the Police and internal teams have commenced. Details will be shared when a full report of the incident is completed.
Our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased.”
However, the Umeme statement from Kaujju seems to contradict the Police Statement from Onyango, whereby the company is refuting allegations that deceased were their employees, yet the Police contend otherwise.
