An official of the United Nations (UN) has raised concern about the increasing numbers of Coronavirus infections in Uganda, especially after President Yoweri Museveni announced that government was planning to set up a COVID-19 response centre at Namboole Stadium, with at least 40,000 beds.
Museveni made this revelation during his state of the nation address last Thursday, when he revealed that the Ministry of Health had identified Namboole Stadium as one of the facilities that can easily be turned into an isolation centre and quarantine area for COVID-19 patients and suspected cases.
While commenting about the matter, Dmitry Pozhidaev, the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) Regional Advisor for Southern & East Africa, Head of Office, Uganda, tweeted thus;
“@DDPozhidaev COVID-19: Museveni: Govt Preparing 40,000 Beds at Namboole Stadium. @GovUganda is right to take these measures. #COVID19 cases doubled in 10 days b/w 29 May & 7 June. At this rate (God forbid!), #Uganda will have 2500 cases by end June & 20,000 by end July.”
This however comes at a time when the Ministry of Health had just announced that Uganda currently has 665 cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19, after 8 new cases were registered from the 2,423 samples tested on Tuesday, June 9, 2020.
“8 new cases were confirmed among samples tested on 09 June 2020, bringing the total confirmed cases to 665.
4 of the new cases are truck drivers while the other 4 are among contacts and alerts from Kyotera, Amuru and Kayunga Districts. Total recoveries stand at 119,” Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng tweeted on Wednesday.
