Update: Bulamu Island Boat Cruise Saturday Gruesome Accident, 22 Confirmed Dead So far

The Uganda people’s defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson Lt.Col.Deo Akiiki has confirmed that more 9 bodies have been recovered this morning adding to the total deaths to 22 now.

“UPDF marine divers have located and marked the wreckage this morning by 7am. There are working with police to recover more bodies trapped in the wreckage.

So far they have recovered 9 more of the trapped bodies who adds to the 13 recovered last night, making it 22 who are confirmed dead so far. More are being got.

Air force and police helicopter have deployed air surveillance to locate possible floating bodies, he added.

At mutima Island, 22 party dwellers have so far been confirmed dead as a boat they were traveling on capsized on Lake Victoria on Saturday evening.

The boat was carrying about 120 people. Police marine has so far managed to rescue 40 alive, but others are still unacounted for.

Among those rescued include Buganda kingdom’s prince Wasajja, Freeman Kiyingi and musician Irine Namubiru among others.

Eye witnesses said the cause of the accident could have been due to over loading. Another said the boat had been under repair and was not yet fit to be used as it was still undergoing service.

The group left Port bell Luzira aboard a boat belonging to a one Templar who offers boat cruise services, and were headed to Mutima Island on Lake Victoria.

However, as they sailed, the boat was wrecked by weight, breaking into two and pouring its contents in the lake.

Uganda Police Spokesperson Emilian Kayima confirmed the accident.

“Yes it is true, Police Marine is handling the tragedy,” he said.

“Our marine unit teams have rescued over 40 people alive. Ten confirmed dead. The rescue mission is still on to find others,” he added. RIP.
