The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) have today arrested a patrol unit commander and a soldier over the murder of an Anglican Church cleric who was shot dead on Wednesday morning.
It is alleged that Benon Musimenta was shot dead by a UPDF soldier on Wednesday morning, in Karusandara Village, Karusandara Sub-county, along the Kasese-Hoima Road, as he rode on a motorcycle with his wife Allen Musimenta, heading to their garden.
Prior to being murdered, Musimenta was lay leader at Kogore COU (Anglican) under the South Ruwenzori diocese and was to be ordained Reverend in November this year, according to the widow.
Commenting about the matter, the UPDF spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire tweeted on Thursday thus; “The Commander and the soldier who shot the Church lay leader in Kasese were yesterday arrested as investigations commenced.”
He added that “They will appear in the military court martial .The UPDF highly regrets the incident and extends its deepest sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family.”
But Karemire did not divulge details about the identities of the errant soldiers and or where they are currently being detained.
However, the widow, Allen Musimenta, insists that she wants a thorough investigation into the shooting and justice for her husband.
Musimenta said that she was riding with her husband on a motorcycle heading to the garden in Kanamba village, Karusandara sub-county in in Kasese District when they met soldiers at Karungibati along Hima-Kasese road.
“The UPDF soldiers who were standing on both sides of the road stopped us and before they could talk to us, I saw one of them crossing the road from one side before opening fire at my husband. The motorcycle lost control, my husband and I fell down as he bled profusely. He was shot in the neck,” Musimenta narrated the shocking ordeal.
