Muganga’s arrest had drawn wide condemnation from Ugandans his family members and academic staff inclusive who questioned why the security did not just summon him but rather resorted to cruel and inhuman arrest.

Reacting to comments about the academic, army spokeswoman Flavia Byekwaso said allegations that Lawrence Muganga had been kidnapped were false. “He was arrested by the joint security forces for espionage and illegal stay in the country,” despite being a citizen with all required credentials.

Few days after, security operatives released Muganga without any clear charges.
