Kampala: The State Minister for Primary Education Hon. Rosemary Seninde On Friday 2 August said, the Ministry of Education will repair classroom blocks at Wakiso School for the Deaf where disaster struck and caused damage to critical infrastructure.
The Minister said an assessment report indicated that a heavy downpour on Monday, 08 July 2019, destroyed the roof of two classroom blocks. She added that the repairs will cost shs46.3 million.
Seninde was responding to a concern by Hon. Hellen Asamo (PWD, Eastern) and explained that the Finance Ministry would avail the money soon.
“Cabinet on Monday, 13 May 2019 directed the Finance Minister to provide a contingency fund of shs26 billion to the Education Ministry to facilitate repairs of 356 primary, secondary and technical institutes damaged by various disasters. Wakiso School for the Deaf will take first call on these resources,” said Seninde.
Asamo, however, said that children at the school were studying in shifts, which posed a challenge to adequate coverage of the curriculum and called for an urgent response as they wait for rehabilitation of the school.
“I have been told that students in S.1 and S.2 are sharing classes with students in S.3 and S.4. We should take tents to this school to allow the children to learn comfortably as we wait for this money to be released,” Asamo said.
Seninde committed to engage the Office of the Prime Minister for the provision of tents to the affected school, as Government plans rehabilitation works.
