Sheema: Anglican Christians in Sheema District have insisted on their demand for getting their own diocese, thus being independent of West Ankole diocese.
It should be recalled that early this year, a group of Sheema district Anglicans came out publicly and told the office of West Ankole diocese as they no longer want to be under it. They thus created their own unofficial one they called ‘Central Ankole Diocese.’
To show serious they are, the Anglicans started building the Bishop’s house, offices and other preparations as a sign to show that they were/are ready for their own diocese.
However, the issue of a new diocese brought about confusion and internal conflicts among Christians, especially those who were supporting and those opposing the breakaway. It also brought about exchange of words between West Ankole Diocese clergy and those from Sheema district.
Amidst all the above confusion, the church of Uganda Province in Kampala outed a letter suspending the creation of new dioceses in Uganda until further notice.
Although the letter seemed to be breaking the backbones of Sheema Christians, instead it catalysed them and they fundraised more money to continue with their preparations.
Currently, the Bishop’s house and other offices are at roofing stages.
So because of this conflict, many politicians from Sheema district have greatly involved in the activity of building and are preparing for their new diocese.
Among them is Hon. Jacklet Atuhaire Rwabukurukuru, the Woman MP Sheema district who has contributed over Shs10M plus sponsoring all roofing materials, Prof. Elijah Dickens Mushemeza, former Sheema South MP, Dr Elioda Tumwesigye, Dr Mesearch Katusiime Rwebiita, David Kabigumira Chairman Sheema district, Abel Kahara Atucungwiire Mayor Sheema municipality and so many otherwise .
