Police officers were outsmarted by supporters of National Unity Platform party presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine who opted to swim through a swamp to attend a political rally after being blocked on the road.
Bobi Wine had organised his rally in Mayuge District on Monday, November 16, but security officers sealed off the main road heading to the venue, forcing locals who believe in the youthful leader’s aspirations to swim through a swamp to attend the function.
In what appeared like a movie, the armed officers were captured strategically positioned on the road ready to confront anybody who dared to go past the roadblocks. On the other side, supporters were filmed sailing through a swamp on their way to the meeting venue.
As the officers continued to anxiously wait for an anticipated confrontation to erupt, they were stunned to learn later that the politician’s supporters had already made it to the venue through the swamp.
Mayuge district is known for sugarcane plantation but locals have for long been decrying the existence of cartels who have been enriching themselves at the farmers’ expense.Bobi Wine who is seen as a source of hope, especially among the youth, made a grand entry in Mayegu despite facing resistance from police officers.
He addressed a fairly huge gathering where he promised to solve issues affecting sugarcane farmers and youths if elected the country’s next head of state. Prior to the Mayegu rally, his convoy had been teargassed by police officers who were trying to disperse his supporters who marched towards his campaign venue in Mbale.
The NUP presidential candidate will be facing off with President Yoweri Museveni who will be seeking his sixth term in office. The 76-year-old National Resistance Movement (NRM) leader suspended his presidential campaigns last week in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.
