Kampala: The Uganda Police Force (UPF) have refuted allegations that they withdrew Very Important Person (VIP) protection from retired justice George Kanyeihamba.
This follows allegations that the police had recalled bodyguards from Kanyeihamba’s residence following a standoff between him and a policeman deployed to guard at his home, which happened a few days back. A statement released by police on June 29th, 2019, signed by deputy police spokesperson Fred Enanga, titled POLICE REFUTES CLAIMS IT WITHDREW VIP PROTECTION PERSONNEL reads thus;
“The police would like to dismiss claims on social media that it withdrew its VIP protection officers, deployed to guard retired Supreme Court Justice Prof. Dr. G.W Kanyeihamba, as false and baseless. The police has not withdrawn its officers and is still responsible for the protection of the retired Supreme Court Justice.” Enanga adds that “As you are all aware, there were attempts by the VIP, to have broad discretion over the choice of the VIP protection officers and their responsibility, which violates the security protocols for VIPs. We want to ad that the allowances of the VIP protection officers are promptly paid by the judiciary and no the police, as claimed in social media circles.” Enanga went on too state that “Although we do not discuss our specific VIP security measures, we continue to closely monitor and review our security arrangements both close body and at the residence of the retired Supreme Court Justice . Any additional protection and related security adjustments will be provided if the situation warrants…”
